Basics Course in Western Herbal Medicine

The only one of its kind in Ohio


In the world today eighty percent of indigenous populations consistently use herbs for healing, cooking and wellness. The traditional practice of herbal medicine serves as the foundation of many modern medicines, such as traditional Western Herbal model, Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda the medicine of India and Tibet. Today many of the current research studies use traditional indications as their base for plants medicinal activity. In this course participants will learn the fundamental skills needed for understanding and utilizing regional as well as cultivated herbs. This course provides a rich learning experience for community members as taught by an experienced Clinical Herbalist with eight years of clinical practice and an Herbal Medicine Master’s degree. Anya is a graduate of Tai Sophia Institute for the Healing arts in Laurel, MD. Tai Sophia Institute is the only Master of Science residential graduate program in the US.  This course is unique in the state of Ohio. It is also distinguished by its hands on practicality in teaching a many faceted subject such as Herbal Medicine. The course is designed to develop a deeper appreciation of our interconnection with the earth, the plants and our selves in the roles of healers. The five month course will take place one weekend day per month the dates to be announced. A certificate of completion will be offered at the end of the course.


The course program topics will include:


  1. Exploration of a Wellness Model of Health from an Herbal Prospective & Western Herbal History as well as Facial, Tongue and Pulse assessment skills.

  2. Study of Materia Medica or Plant resumes–Traditional uses, The Eclectics, Native American lore. We will focus on Medicinal Herbs their current research and applications.

  3. Every class includes an Herb Walk, Botany and Wild Crafting–Knowledge of Local       Medicinal Plants.

  4. Learning how to cultivate, harvest and dry herbs.

  5. Herbal preparations & cooking with herbs in every class.

  6. We will foster our relationship with Nature & Plant Spirit Medicine.

  7. This workshop is suitable for health professionals and community members alike.
